Anthony Nguyen, Ph.D.
Postdoctoral Researcher
Anthony Nguyen earned a Ph.D. in Genetics and Genomics and an M.S. in Bioinformatics from the University of Michigan, after completing dual B.S. degrees in Genetics and Microbiology at Michigan State University. During his doctoral research, he investigated genomic duplications and retrocopies in canine genome assemblies and large short-read data consortiums, identifying breed-distinguishing copy number variants and emphasizing the importance of correcting duplications in genome assembly. At the Evo-Genome Lab, Anthony is working on advancing the assembly of the sea robin genome. Outside of research, he enjoys strength training, gaming, and anime.

Sophie Kelly, M.S.
Graduate Student | Integrative Biology Graduate Program
Sophie Kelly is a Ph.D. student in the Integrative Biology Graduate Program at the University of Chicago, working jointly between the Gillis and Herbert labs at the Marine Biological Laboratory and UChicago. She earned a B.S. in Marine Biology from Roger Williams University and an M.S. in Biology from Southern Connecticut State University. Her research examines the olfactory systems of marine fishes, with a focus on benthic species. In the Gillis Lab, she uses scRNA sequencing to characterize developing olfactory receptor neuron types in the little skate (Leucoraja erinacea). In the Herbert Lab, she investigates structural, functional, and genomic differences underlying chemosensory trade-offs between sea robins (Prionotus carolinus and P. evolans).

Nguyen Tran, M.S.
Lab Manager
Nguyen Tran completed a B.A./M.S. in Conservation Biology at Northwestern University and spent two years working behind the scenes with various collections at the Field Museum. Returning to research, he is interested in novel evolutionary adaptations, such as the convergent evolution of specialized limb structures in bats and sea robins. Additionally, he also helps manage the Evo-Genome Lab with Amy, coordinating animal care, lab organization, and day-to-day operations. Outside the lab, Nguyen is invested in archival fashion, watching soccer, and caring for his cats, Nadine and Lil’ Bro.
